FAQs

When is the best time to go?

The Gateway of India is beautiful all year round, but we believe it is best to visit outside of the monsoon season. Monsoon season is from June to September.

Tourists generally visit the monument during the middle of the day. To beat the hustle and bustle, we recommend visiting the Gateway in the early morning or late at night when the arch will be lit up.

How much is it?

Admission to the Gateway is free. However, you will need to take cash if you are going to buy food or items around the monument, as many vendors do not take card.

What should I wear?

As you are probably aware, India is a hot and humid country all year round. Be respectful of locals by not wearing too little. Men should not be topless, and women should not wear beach attire.

The tropical climate means that India’s weather is separated by the monsoon season. If you are travelling to the Gateway during the monsoon season, we advise wearing a light raincoat as torrential showers do often occur.

What should I bring?

As previously mentioned, cash for food and buying items around the Gateway is advised.

A hat and sunscreen is a good way to protect yourself from the sun, especially during the middle of the day where temperatures frequently surpass 30 degrees.

A camera! So you can capture and share your fantastic memories with all of your friends and family.

How long does it take to look around?

Visitors should allow 1-2 hours to look around the monument. However, if you are looking to wander around the area, you should allow for a few hours to get everything covered.

What is around the Gateway?

The Gateway of India is situated on the harbour so there are boats to several different places you can head to. The most popular destination is the Elephanta Caves, caves that are dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. Boat trips cost around 120 rupees. This does not include a tip.

The Taj Mahal Palace is India’s most luxurious hotel. The exclusive hotel is located opposite the Gateway of India and is well worth a photograph!

The National Gallery of Modern Art is a five-minute walk from the Gateway. Entry to the Gallery is 500 rupees, and it is open from Tuesday to Sunday every week.
